22 Gluten Free and Egg Free Desserts
Finding delicious dessert recipes that are both gluten-free and egg-free can be a challenge. Today, we’re excited to share 22 mouthwatering dessert options that are free of gluten and eggs, so you can enjoy your favorite treats, even with dietary restrictions.
Why do we need eggs in gluten free dessert recipes?
Eggs are a key ingredient in many gluten free dessert recipes. They provide structure and stability to the final product and contribute to the overall texture. Eggs also help to bind all of the ingredients together, ensuring a tender crumb in gluten free baked goods.
Without eggs, gluten free desserts would be more likely to crumble or fall apart. In short, eggs are essential to many gluten-free dessert recipes.
Egg allergy VS egg sensitivity
An egg allergy is a condition in which the body reacts to proteins found in eggs and involves the immune system. Eggs are considered high-allergen food because they can cause severe reactions in people who are allergic to them.
Allergic reactions can range from mild such as hives or itching to severe such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat, or coughing and wheezing such as asthma. Even trace amounts of an egg can trigger a reaction if you have a severe egg allergy.
Other symptoms due to egg allergy are nasal congestion, runny nose and sneezing. This is called allergic rhinitis.
If you have egg sensitivity, you may experience digestive symptoms such as cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Egg sensitivity does not involve the immune system and is not life-threatening, unlike an allergy.
Why do some people have more allergies than others?
As per Mayo Clinic, you’re at increased risk of food allergies if asthma, eczema, hives or allergies such as hay fever are common in your family. In addition, if you’re already allergic to one food, you may be at increased risk of becoming allergic to another.
How to get tested for egg allergy?
If you think you may have an egg allergy, get tested by a doctor. Egg allergies are typically diagnosed with a skin prick test or blood test.
For skin prick testing, a small amount of egg protein is placed on the skin, and then a needle is used to prick the skin so the allergen can enter. If you’re allergic to eggs, you’ll usually develop redness, swelling, and itching at the test site within 15 minutes.
Blood tests for egg allergies are also available and are more accurate. They measure the levels of antibodies in your blood that are specific to eggs. You’re likely allergic to eggs if you have high levels of these antibodies.
Gluten free egg replacements
Eggs are found in many gluten free foods, including cakes, cookies, pastries, bread and rolls. And there are plenty of ways to make delicious gluten free egg-free desserts using egg replacers.
Here are 7 of our favorite gluten free egg replacements: (1 egg)
Flaxseed meal: This one is perfect for gluten free baking, as flaxseed meal is naturally gluten free and can be used as a binding agent. To replace one egg, mix 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons of water and let sit for 5 minutes before adding it to your batter or dough.
Psyllium husks: Use 1 tablespoon of psyllium husks (not powder) with 2 tablespoons of water. Stir for about 30 seconds and use immediately, or it will continue to thicken.
Chia seeds: Chia seed egg replacer is ideal when you need more binding. To make 1 egg, mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 2 1/2 tablespoons of water and set aside for 10 minutes. It will become a gel-like mixture.
Baking powder: This is a great egg replacer for leavening cakes or muffins. 3 tablespoons carbonated water, 2 teaspoons baking powder and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil.
Applesauce: If you are looking to add moisture to a cake, muffin or quick bread recipe, add 1/4 cup of applesauce for each egg called in the recipe.
Yogurt or buttermilk: Use 1/4 cup of plain yogurt or buttermilk for each egg. This works best in muffins, pancakes and coffee cakes.
Gluten free egg replacer: An egg replacer is a powdered product used as a substitute for eggs in baking.
While egg replacers work in many gluten free dessert recipes, they don’t yield excellent results like real eggs. In addition, an egg replacer should be used to replace a maximum of 2 eggs in a recipe.
