This is a deliciously balanced Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Banana Pumpkin Muffin with subtle fall spices and plenty of chocolate.

Why You’ll Love These Muffins

  • Moist and tender: Banana and pumpkin puree give the muffins a soft, moist texture.
  • Two layers of chocolate: A rich cocoa swirl runs through the top, while semi-sweet chocolate chips add extra chocolate flavor and little pockets of chocolate.
  • Subtle fall spices: Cinnamon and cardamom complement the banana and pumpkin without overpowering them.
  • Dairy-free: Perfect for those that follow dairy-free diet or are lactose intolerant.

  • Easy to prepare: The wet ingredients come together quickly in a food processor, making these muffins simple to prepare. No mashing of banana or whisking until smooth.

Key Ingredients and Swaps

Ripe banana: One medium ripe banana adds natural sweetness and moisture while allowing the pumpkin flavor to come through.

Pumpkin puree: Use pure pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices for this pumpkin muffin.

Brown sugar: Adds sweetness and a light molasses flavor. You can substitute coconut sugar in the same amount. Alternatively, replace it with 1/2 date or maple syrup and 1/2 granulated sugar.

Extra virgin olive oil: Adds moisture and healthy fats while keeping the muffins dairy-free. Melted coconut oil or avocado oil can be used instead.

Eggs: Two large eggs help bind the ingredients and provide structure. If you can’t have eggs you can try one of my egg replacements. However, the texture will be denser and the muffin will be heavier.

Gluten-free flour blend: I used this gluten-free measure-for-measure 1:1 flour blend. Different blends may produce slightly different textures.

Cinnamon and cardamom: These spices add gentle warmth. You can replace both with 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice for a more traditional pumpkin spice flavor, be sure it is gluten-free. I use this gluten-free brand.

Semi-sweet dairy-free chocolate chips: Sprinkled over the muffins before baking, they add chocolate flavor and texture while giving the tops an appealing finish. I used these gluten-free & dairy-free chocolate chips.

Tips for Perfect Dairy-Free Banana Pumpkin Muffins

How do I get a distinct chocolate swirl?

Mix two tablespoons of cocoa powder with about 1/2 cup of the prepared batter until smooth. Spoon a little over each filled muffin cup and gently swirl with a toothpick or skewer. Avoid overmixing so the chocolate remains visible.

How do I prevent the muffins from sticking to the parchment liners?

Lightly brush the inside of each parchment liner with olive oil before adding the batter. Let the muffins cool completely before peeling away the paper.

How do I know when the muffins are done?

Insert a toothpick into the center of a muffin. It should come out without wet batter, although a few moist crumbs are fine. If necessary, bake for a few additional minutes.

Can I use frozen pumpkin puree?

Yes. Thaw it completely in the refrigerator and stir well before measuring. If it has separated and released excess liquid, adjust the consistency before adding it to the batter.

What to Serve with Banana Pumpkin and Chocolate Muffins

Serve these muffins as part of a fall brunch with fresh fruit, yogurt, or scrambled eggs.

For a more indulgent dessert, drizzle the muffins with gluten-free chocolate syrup or gluten-free butterscotch caramel sauce just before serving. You can also serve them slightly warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a simple dessert that highlights the chocolate swirl and chocolate chip topping.

How to Store Dairy-Free Banana Pumpkin Muffins

At room temperature: Store completely cooled muffins in an airtight container for up to 2 days. In the refrigerator, keep them in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

In the freezer: Freeze cooled muffins in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months for best quality. Thaw at room temperature or overnight in the refrigerator.

To reheat: Warm an individual muffin in the microwave for about 10–15 seconds, adjusting as needed. Avoid overheating, which can make gluten-free muffins dry or rubbery.
