This Gluten-Free Fish Pie is about delicate fish, mildly seasoned creamy white sauce, veggies, fluffy mashed potato topping, and a sprinkle of cheese baked until crispy. If you are thinking about comfort food, this fish pie is a must try dish.
Simple Gluten-Free Fish Pie Recipe
There are many ways to make a fish pie, from poaching the fish first to choosing various crusts, seafood, herbs, and veggies. This recipe focuses on simplicity, ensuring a delicious fish pie that even novices can make.
Fluffy Mashed Potatoes
Start with making fluffy mashed potatoes. It’s essential to use the right type of potato to keep them creamy and lump-free. I recommend using russet or Yukon gold potatoes, they are a great choice for this dish. Be sure they are tender before whipping them up. For an extra touch of flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the potatoes.
Creamy Fish Filling
For the creamy fish filling, sauté leeks or onions in some butter. Once softened, add garlic and then pour in milk along with your chosen herbs. I used bay leaf, tarragon, and clove. Allow the milk to simmer for a few minutes so the herbs infuse it with delicate flavors.
Poaching the Fish
Once the milk is deliciously flavored, add your seafood and cook for about three minutes to poach the fish. To finish the sauce, combine cream with tapioca flour and Dijon mustard.
This will create a perfectly smooth texture for your white sauce. Stir in the remaining ingredients and cook just long enough for the sauce to start thickening, about three to five minutes.
Choosing the Right Seafood for Fish Pie
You can use various seafood in a fish pie, including salmon, cod, halibut, sea bass, snapper, prawns, shrimp, and even some smoked fish like cod. I used two pounds for my recipe, but you can adjust this to your preference, using anywhere from one to two pounds. If you opt for less fish, increase the amount of vegetables.
Selecting Vegetables for Fish Pie
A traditional British fish pie often includes green peas, preferably petite peas. Other great options are leeks, onions, parsnips, corn, carrots, and celery. Ultimately, the choice of vegetables is up to you! In my recipe, I used leeks, petite peas, and corn, keeping it simple and delicious!
Suggested Sides for Fish Pie
My personal preference is to pair fish pie with a light salad, such as the coleslaw in vinaigrette, as the pie already contains potatoes and veggies in the filling. This keeps the meal balanced and refreshing.
Bread Pairing Options
Alternatively, you can serve the pie with a slice of delicious gluten-free crusty bread, such as Gluten-Free Homemade Italian Bread. Great for dipping into the fish sauce and complements the dish well.
