Matar Paneer Easy Recipe

Why stop at simple green peas? Indulge with peas cooked in spicy tomato sauce and Indian cheese. This naturally gluten free vegetarian dish is prevalent in North India and is typically served with naan bread or roti. Matar paneer has wonderfully blended flavours and can be served with rice making it a healthy vegetarian meal. After tasting this dish in my favourite Indian restaurant I created my own delicious version

Peas are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, fiber and low in calories, making this a healthy diet friendly dish. For a dairy free option substitute paneer cheese for tofu. This vegetarian recipe is outstanding. Check out our gluten free naan bread recipe ->



1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp. cumin seed
1 medium size onion, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 green chili pepper, chopped
1 Tbsp. minced ginger (1-inch)
2 tsp. coriander powder
1 tsp. garam masala powder
1 tsp. chili powder
½ tsp. turmeric powder
3 large ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped
2 cups frozen peas
Sea salt to taste
¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro plus some for garnish
8 oz. paneer cheese, cut into small cubes (Indian Cheese)
¼ cup cream or coconut cream (optional)


Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and cook for 1 minute. Add onion and cook until soft, about 4 minutes
Add garlic, green chili pepper, ginger, coriander, garam masala, chili powder and turmeric. Cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes season with salt and cook until they become soft, about 3 minutes
Transfer tomato mixture to a blender and grind into a paste
Return tomato paste back in the saucepan, add 1 cup of water and cook for 10 minutes. Add frozen peas and cook for 3 more minutes
Stir in cilantro and paneer and remove from the heat. Serve hot with fresh cilantro and if desired drizzle with cream
