Going gluten-free is a growing trend around the world. More and more people are noticing the benefits to it, and are jumping on the bandwagon looking to improve their health. Still, most people are not like us, and don’t fully understand what living without gluten really is, or why people do it. It is important to know why you are embarking on this route before you get fully in to it, and it is also important to dispel some common misconceptions about the gluten-free diet before they begin to take hold. Here are just a few.
Going gluten-free means you will lose a ton of weight instantly
While the mix of foods that you eat when you’re gluten-free certainly is of the healthy variety most of the time, not everyone who goes on the diet slims down completely. A lot of people who eliminate gluten from their lives do in fact experience dramatic weight loss, but that is only if they stick to the actual healthy points of the diet. We want people to consume more veggies, fruits and lean foods, but as with anything you need put in work and stay diligent in order to shed the pounds off.
You won’t get enough nutrients
This is a wide-spread rumor, but it is patently false. Yes, many of the foods that contain gluten are high in nutrients like fiber or iron, but it is still possible to get these without consuming those foods. Foods like eggs, fish, poultry, and nuts are high in iron and fiber, and the more whole foods you eat, the better your nutrient balance will be. If you vary the foods you eat, and make sure to focus on some foods that you might not be getting enough of at times, then you won’t have anything to worry about. There are more ways to get nutrients than through traditional channels.
It is only good for people with celiac disease
The benefits of being gluten-free for those who suffer from celiac disease are well-documented. People suffering from this ailment can see relatively fast results by sticking to it. One common myth is that the diet is only effective for those with this or perhaps other digestive ailments. That isn’t true. Living gluten-free means you will limit yourself to foods that are healthier than most others, and avoid overly processed foods that are unhealthy.
